WIKIS

Wikis

"Wiki" is the word for "fast" in Hawaiian. A wiki is a page or collection of Web pages designed to enable anyone who accesses them to contribute or modify the content easily. Wikis are often used to create collaborative sites and to power online communities. Wikis are used in education to allow students to co-create documents and research topics collaboratively. Watch the video on wikis (4 min.)
The collaborative encyclopedia Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page is the most popular example of a wiki today. Wikis have several key characteristics, which include:
• May invites all users to edit any page or to create new pages within the wiki Website, using only a simple Web browser.
• Promotes meaningful topic associations between different pages by making page link creation intuitively easy and showing whether an intended target page exists or not.
• Seeks to involve the visitor in an ongoing process of creation and collaboration that constantly changes the Website landscape. A wiki enables documents to be written collaboratively, iteratively, in a simple markup language using a Web browser. A single page in a wiki Website is referred to as a “wiki page”. The entire collection of pages, which are usually well interconnected by hyperlinks, is "the wiki". A defining characteristic of wiki technology is the ease with which pages can be created and updated. Many wikis are open to alteration by the general public. Many edits can be made in real-time and appear almost instantly online.

  1. Wiki is more convenient program for collaboration. It uses to express group thoughts(many authors, various personalities, experiences and opinions) while blogs express individual thoughts.
Wiki pages can be created and used by many. While a blog is a product created by one and used by many.
It is difficult to choose what is the best.
What kind of website we are going to use depends on personal preference and what aim we want to achieve using one of these website.

  2. Blog allows a person, or group of persons, to share some individual information . Wiki allows anyone create new pages and update your content whenever they want. So blogs are made only by one author(or group) and wikis open to collaboration. Blog posts are usually one person's thoughts, ideas etc, and it can be followed by users’ comments. Wiki posts are based on academic knowledge, here can be post results of research group project. On wiki you can not leave your comments. Content of blog is considered to be static: once posted, the posting doesn't change and content of wiki is not permanent, it can be revised by anyone. That are differences between blogs and wikis.

  3. Blogs and wikis can be used for similar purposes, but they have distinct qualities that lend themselves to different purposes. For example, both can be used very effectively to post updates and announcements for professional purposes, and allow users to ask questions and post-comments. However, a blog is primarily a personal/individual tool and is best used if you do not want others to edit/change what you have created, while a wiki is best used as a collaboration tool.Wikis are best used for specific tasks such as collaborative research in which you want others to revise and refine the text.

  4. Wikis can be more useful for group work, because others members of group can add their point of view, opinion. Many people use wikis for their collective work.
And blogs usually are written by one person and then others can discuss the work, but they can't change the content.

  5. The difference between blog and wiki is that wiki is a program for collaboration and many people can use it to express their thougts.
And blog created by one person but it can be use for others with the same purpose( to express their own thoughts).

  6. As far as I understand, wikis and blogs have absolutely different functions and purposes. So,that is not right to choose.
Blog is created and written only by one person for sharing some information with friends. Other users do not have influence on the written material. They can, of course, leave comments, but the blog-writer can turn this option off.
While wiki is a free, democratic source of information on one concrete topic. Everyone can come there and write anything they want.

  7. Blogs and wikis are really different. Blogs are crated by individuals, they can be edited only by individuals, they express personal ideas, points of view, thoughts. At that time wikis are created by the multitude of people, each of them take part in the creation of the content, they express common thoughts and ideas, the ideas of the collective work. So wikis are more useful nowadays, otherwise I prefer reading blogs

  8. "Two or more heads are better than one" - this quote perfectly illustrates the difference between a wiki and a blog. As in blog man create page by himself and only he can edit it. And in the wiki if one person does not know something another will complement its, and their joint efforts to get a full, interesting informative content.

  9. Blogs and wikis are both very useful and convenient, but they do have different functions and directions. Wikis allow the users to add, modify, or delete the information that was given. But blogs help the users to express their own points of view, share thoughts. The user has a chance to influence the readers, discuss the problem or make a conclusion.

  10. Wikis are very useful for group work, as each member can update their information and change the other. Wiki gathers the knowledge of all employees, this differs from a blog, blog created by a particular person

  11. Blogs and Wikis are completely different programs. They have distinctive qualities and purposes. As for blogs, they are primarily personal pages which express individual ideas, thoughts, interests, views. Nobody except owner can something edit or change. Wiki is a program which can be used for collaboration. It allows to post announcement for professional purposes and everyone, without exceptions, can add, change or even delete previous information.

  13. Wikis are used and can be edited by many people. It is a website for a group of people or just for the collaboration, where everyone can add the information. The blog is created by one human and can be viewed by many others. But that individuals who is registered on the blogs can submit a comment. There are not comments on the wikis.

  14. Blogs and wikis can be used for similar purposes, but there is a great difference between them. Wikis are suited for information that doesn’t expire in a short time, while blogs are better for short-lived news. The wiki is perfect as an ongoing encyclopedia of information in a larger and more useful, comprehensive way. The information in a wiki is meant as long-term informative articles.
Blog posts are intended for more timely news. Blogs are crated by individuals, they can express only their own point of viev, while wikis are created by groups of people with different thoughts.

  15. Blogs and wikis are types of web site. But they have some differences. Blog can use only one person, and wiki can use many people.I think the wiki is more convenient site for certain people. For example, for those, who have common interests. And this is very good, because there people can share their thoughts.

  16. I realized Wiki - a website that allows users to change their own content pages through the browser using a simplified and more convenient than HTML, wiki markup text.It is very convenient and practical in application. And blog - a website, the main thrust of which - records images or multimedia, regularly added. For blog entries characterized by short temporal significance. The difference between a blog and a wiki that Blog it is page which can edit only one person who created this blog and wiki can edit or add to other people.

  18. Wiki is more sociable programme! I think Wiki more easy and comfortable than Blog.Blog is a page for one person but Wiki is a page for everyone. Everyone can using this page! But in some things they are similar, for example blog and wiki can be used for similar goals. But as for me I prefer wiki.

  19. For me Wiki is better than blogs because people can work together, it's like they are working in a team, creating and developing a web-page together. Wiki is a very convenient programme. Others can help you to revise the information on the site. These programmes are different and both are very useful for sharing and discussing information.

  20. As for me both of these programmes are very useful for our society, but I prefer Wiki, because there we can write some information, edit and do some other things. Blog looks like a personal page, where we can put our own information, so, this programme is not for wide use unlike Wiki.

  21. A blog is a sort of online magazine. It can be updated daily or weekly or whenever the author wants. A wiki is a platform that is meant for anyone to update in real time. A blog is owned by an individual whereas wiki is being updated by many people around the world.

  22. Some wikis allow you to change the contents to everyone, not just registered users. Just as the walls of buildings and fences, written with obscene graffiti and drawings adorn the graffiti in the wiki sometimes spoil the content or add something inappropriate. But, in contrast to the walls and fences in the wiki content easily return to an earlier version: fix is easier than to spoil. If someone persistently and deliberately seeks to harm users wiki, you can close it to make changes.

  23. To my mind wikis are more suitable for collaboration work because they give an opportunity to hold group management, brainstorming, to keep group lecture notes. It's the platform for gathering and structuring written data. It's the technology of interaction of the user and websites for collaboration work.Blogs express the individual thoughts which can be updated at any time. As for wiki it's updated by anybody at real time.
